Beginner Tips & Simple Patterns

Just starting with Sudoku? These simple strategies will help you solve your first puzzles and build confidence.

Start with the Obvious

Look for rows, columns, or boxes that already have many numbers filled in. These are your best starting points because they have fewer possibilities to consider.

Scan for Missing Numbers

In any row, column, or box, check which numbers from 1-9 are missing. If only one number is missing, you can fill it in immediately.

Use the Elimination Method

For each empty cell, mentally check what numbers could go there by eliminating numbers that already exist in the same row, column, and box.

Look for Single Candidates

If a cell is the only place in its row, column, or box where a particular number can go, that number must go there.
